Geisenheimer Science Walk: The Rhine as a Center of Development for Cultural Landscapes

On June 26, 2025, curious minds gathered for a unique open-air experience as part of the Geisenheim Science Walk. Led by Dr. Jörn Schultheiß from the university's Competence Center for Cultural Landscape, participants set off on a 5 km round trip through the forest and along the Rhine, starting at the pavilion near the Niederwald Monument.

During the walk, Dr. Schultheiß offered fascinating insights into the historical, cultural, and environmental significance of the Rhine. Topics included the river’s role in shaping regional landscapes, its function as a boundary and transport route, and how it's being affected by climate change.

Blending movement, fresh air, and science, the event offered participants a new and engaging way to experience research — right where history and nature meet.

Geisenheimer Science Tent at the Besser-als-Nix Festival

This year Hochschule Geisenheim University once again made an appearance at the BAN!topia tent at the Besser-als-Nix Festival. This Geisenheimer Science Tent takover offered guests fascinating talks on currect research topics. Citizens of all ages were invited to listen, ask questions and get involved with the university's focus areas!

Geisenheimer Science Pub in the Weinländer wine bar

After five successful years in Geisenheim, the Geisenheimer Science Pub made its debut in the state capital. On April 24, 2025, the event was hosted in the cozy Weinländer wine bar in Wiesbaden's Rheingauviertel, inviting curious minds to explore current research topics in a relaxed, conversational atmosphere.

The evening featured two engaging talks from researchers at Hochschule Geisenheim University.

Professor Kai Voss-Fels (Department of Plant Breeding) took the audience on a journey into the genetics of wine in his talk "Mutated Wine & Wild Genes – How New Grape Varieties Are Created". He explored where our favorite grape varieties come from, how new ones are bred, and why mutations and genetics play a key role in the future of viticulture.

Professor Ilona Leyer (Department of Applied Ecology) followed with her talk "From Vineyard to Landscape – How to Bring Biodiversity Back to the Rheingau". She illustrated how the landscape of the Rheingau has evolved over time, how these changes impact biodiversity, and what we can do to support both nature and wine production.
