Professorship for Vegetation Technology

Vegetation Technology: Teaching and Research

Vegetation Technology is an interdisciplinary field that plays a central role in landscape architecture, horticulture, and landscape gardening.

As a focus of both our research and teaching, vegetation technology addresses the sustainable greening of urban environments, including spaces such as roofs, underground car parks, and building facades. A deep understanding of local soils and artificially constructed sites, as well as strategies for their protection and enhancement, enables us to achieve various goals in terms of design and technical implementation.

Our aim is to develop innovative solutions to the challenges of urban greening. We work intensively on questions relating to the optimization of construction materials – especially substrates and drainage materials – as well as plant transpiration and its calculation.

Research Focus Areas
  • Water retention for greened rooftops
  • Automatic irrigation of vegetation areas in gardening and landscaping
  • Development of physicval methods for marking substrates and their properties
  • Simulation of heavy rainfall events
Teaching Focus Areas
  • Foundational knowledge of the sustainable treatment and use of soils, earth, and substrates in landscapes and artificially created spaces.
  • Advanced knowledge of planting in general, lawn/seeding work, tree planting in urban areas, and the greening of elevated locations
  • Specializations: Sports field construction, greening rooftops and facades, biological engineering construction methods
