A binational doctorate (cotutelle) is jointly supervised by two universities in different countries. Doctoral candidates are affiliated with both universities and conduct parts of their research at each institution.
The arrangement is based on an individual agreement between the participating universities, which sets out the terms of supervision, research stays, dissertation review, and the doctoral examination.
Upon successful completion, one jointly awarded doctoral degree is conferred. Depending on the agreement, the degree is documented either by a joint diploma or by two diplomas that refer to each other.
A cotutelle may be particularly attractive if your research project is closely connected to both universities and you are pursuing an international academic career.

Hochschule Geisenheim University and the University of Bordeaux offer opportunities for jointly supervised doctorates and international research stays through their German-French Doctoral Program.
The program focuses on research into the impacts of climate change on specialty crops and their processed products. The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) is also involved in this collaboration.

Bordeaux – Adelaide – Geisenheim – BAG Alliance
Hochschule Geisenheim University, the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences (ISVV) in Bordeaux, and the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) in Adelaide collaborate as part of an international research alliance.
The partnership facilitates the exchange of researchers, knowledge, and projects, as well as the sharing of expertise and research infrastructure. Doctoral candidates can also benefit from these opportunities through international research projects and research stays.

Erasmus+
Under certain conditions, enrolled doctoral candidates may be eligible for funding for stays at European partner universities. Information on eligibility requirements, funding periods, and current funding rates is available from the International Office.
French-German University (FGU)
Doctoral candidates participating in the German-French Doctoral Program may apply for FGU mobility funding for research stays abroad.
