Hochschule Geisenheim University's campus just keeps getting better: In addition to a slew of new buildings, each equipped with state-of-the-art teaching and research spaces and new technical facilities, the opening of the ‘CoLAB’ means the university can now offer students a dedicated holistic and highly flexible learning environment.

Study Spaces Introduced Across Campus

In addition to the CoLAB, a central space for skill-based collaborative learning and teaching located in the new Lecture Hall Building and in use since the end of last year, the university has now set up a range of study spaces for collaborative learning in four different buildings and outside areas on campus.

The CoLAB itself was funded through QuiS, a program by Hesse's state government that promotes quality in teaching and studying and targeted teaching development.

Official Opening on June 11, 4–7 p.m. – Everyone is Welcome!

The new facilities will be presented and officially opened next Wednesday, June 11, 2025 from 4 to 7 p.m. in and around the new Lecture Hall Building. An official welcome and presentation by Professor Mirjam Hey will take place at 5 p.m. in the CoLAB, which is located on the second floor. Staff and students, as well as interested members of the public, are all invited to attend.

The official opening will feature a colorful program for both kids and adults, including:

  • Moss painting workshop with Maren Stollberg: Design your own CoLAB and contribute to greening your surroundings!
  • Graphical recording: Your ideas for the university of the future (HGU 2030) will be illustrated live and in color
  • Homemade ice cream and lemonade: Treats from the university's own ice cream team and homemade lemonade from the Green Office
  • AStA flea market: Swap clothes and other everyday items
  • Drinks, grilled food, and music at the ‘Altes Weinfass’: Enjoy the campus on the green in front of the Lecture Hall Building.

About the CoLAB

These new learning spaces were created as a result of a needs analysis conducted as part of the university didactic team's CoLABorate project. The interdisciplinary project demonstrated that modern learning and working comes with a greater focus on flexibility, skills, and collaboration. Students want to have the ability to change or rearrange their learning spaces to suit their learning requirements. This is exactly what the CoLAB and the new study spaces on campus offer.

The new outdoor areas also combine sustainability, student well-being, and new forms of learning. All of the spaces exemplify the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), underlining Hochschule Geisenheim University's holistic approach to not only ensuring sustainability in teaching and research, but also promoting participatory and integrative living and learning in spaces that are harmonious with the environment.
