Living in Geisenheim

Geisenheim - a University Town

Geisenheim, a town of 12,000 inhabitants, offers students a high quality of living: nestled between the River Rhine and Rheingau vineyards, the university town is also within easy reach of bustling major cities in the Rhine-Main region.

  • Hesse's regional capital, Wiesbaden, is around 20km away.
  • Geisenheim can be easily reached with the Regionalzug (regional train line), with direct connections from Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Koblenz.
  • Frankfurt International Airport is only 40 minutes away by car.

What does the University Town of Geisenheim have to offer?

  • The town center is within walking distance of the campus, and has a range of supermarkets and other shopping facilities, restaurants and cafes, as well as a movie theater.
  • If you are interested in sport, courses are offered in the uni-sport program, as well as by sports clubs in the area. Geisenheim has a wide range of sports facilities, such as an indoor and outdoor pool, a soccer pitch, track and field, and many gym halls and water sports facilities such as stand-up paddling, kayaking or rowing.
  • Their are numerous hiking and mountain-biking trails in the surrounding vineyards and the forests of the Taunus area.

What is student life in Geisenheim like?

  • The Student Organisation (AStA) organizes a varied program of events for students, including tastings, parties and the 'Barrel Get-Togethers'.
  • There are also many events organized by the town throughout the year, among them, the Lindenfest, a festival celebrating the 700-year-old linden tree on the main square, a street food festival and an arts festival,"Besser als nix!", dedicated to emergent culture in the Rheingau region.
  • As well as several restaurants, the Straußwirtschaften (seasonal wine taverns) offer students a relaxed atmosphere to meet friends and enjoy a glass of wine with regional specialities.
  • If you need a little more excitement, the cities of Wiesbaden and Frankfurt are only a (free with the semester ticket!) short train ride away.

Tip for first-semester students

At the beginning of the winter semester, both the University and student organisation (AStA) offer tours of the campus and town to help new students get their bearings!

The Rheingau: life in a unique cultivated landscape

The Rheingau region is world-renowned for its Riesling, as well as its castles, palaces and monasteries dotted along the river. Only a few kilometers downriver you will find the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Middle Rhine Valley with the Loreley and Rüdesheim's Drosselgasse. The Rheingau is visited every year by millions of tourists from all over the world.

The unique cultivated landscape of the Rheingau, shaped by the Rhine and around 3,200 hectares of vineyards, can be enjoyed by hiking the Rheinsteig trail, cruising down the river or by bike - and of course rounded off with a glass of wine!

Looking for Apartments Online

Beware of Scams

Don't fall victim to rental scams! Here are our best tips to help you avoid online fraud:

  • Every landlord in Germany wants to get to know his tenant: Be wary of a landlord who makes excuses for not being able to meet you or show you the apartment (at least in an online video call).
  • Be careful of landlords who require little information about you
  • Beware of too-good-to-be-true rents
  • Google the address of the apartment and the landlord’s name if possible as well as email and phone number to confirm that the landlord/company exists
  • Never transfer any money to a non-German bank account!!
