Tree Planting Ceremony in Honor of President 'Hannes'

In anticipation of the departure of Professor Hans Reiner Schultz as President of our university at the end of August, a small, special event was held in his honor at the beginning of May: the planting of an oak tree on the campus meadow between the Alte Weinfass and the new Lecture Hall Building.

Only the initiators and the chancellor were present at the planting. These were Professor Alexander von Birgelen and Stephanie Braun, Jörg Kunz and Nadja Hilfrich as well as Professor Claudia Kamann and Georg Ardissone-Krauss. In August, the planting of the tree will be officially honored again for all employees.

The planting on May 5 was a pleasant surprise for Professor Schultz  – up until the very last moment, the appointment in his calendar had been marked as (yet another) construction meeting.

About the oak: Quercus x tabajdiana

The oak tree planted in the President's honor is a naturally occurring hybrid of the Hungarian oak (Quercus frainetto) and the sessile oak (Quercus petraea).

In its southeastern European distribution area, it can reach heights of up to 30 meters. Its large, dark green leaves are very similar to those of native oak species and have a high ornamental value.

Due to its high tolerance to drought and heat, Quercus x tabajdiana is considered a tree species that is very well adapted to future climatic conditions. Its resistance to mildew is also a considerable advantage in wood production.
