The Hochschule Geisenheim University community mourns the loss of Professor Hans-Joachim Schulz, who passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 94.

Appointed to the Geisenheim campus of Fachhochschule Wiesbaden (now Hochschule Rheinmain) in 1972, Professor Schulz significantly influenced the development of the field of landscape architecture at Geisenheim. Over the course of more than two decades, he imbued generations of students with his expansive knowledge of landscape architecture and green space planning. In his work, he devoted particular attention to the design and conception of diverse open spaces, including public parks, playgrounds, graveyards, and sites for recreation.

Professor Schulz distinguished himself through his high level of collegiality and his dedication to his students. For him, it was a matter of course to be on campus daily and ensure his door was always open for contact with those around him. Over the course of his career he supervised over 200 diploma theses, with his guiding principle – ‘fördern und fordern’, or ‘challenge and support’ – becoming a formative influence for many students.

Beyond his work at the university, Professor Schulz was active in various professional committees for decades. Of particular note is his involvement in the German Society for Garden Art and Landscape Culture (DGGL), where he headed the Working Group of Young Landscape Architects from 1976 to 1998 and successfully organized numerous competitions for young talent. In 1994, he was made an honorary member of the DGGL for his services to the association.

Professor Schulz went into retirement on August 31, 1994, but remained fondly remembered by all who were touched by his work. His efforts contributed significantly to the reputation and profile of landscape architecture in Geisenheim.

We thank Professor Schulz for his life's work and will work to honor his memory.
