PACKAN: NEW PLATFORM FOR SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING PRESENTED BY DR. PATHAK AT FACHPACK 2025

Presentation of the PackAn project at Solpack 6.0 by Dr. Pathak

The PackAn research focus was presented to a broad audience at SOLPACK, which was organized by pacoon Sustainability Concepts GmbH as part of FACHPACK 2025 (September 23–25, Nuremberg). FACHPACK is one of the leading European trade fairs for packaging, technology and processes.
On September 25, 2025, Dr. Pathak, a scientific Assistant at the Institute for Fresh Product Logistics at Geisenheim University, presented the PackAn platform. She presented the tool developed in the project to a large audience. It enables a holistic assessment of packaging sustainability, taking into account the packaging material, the supply chain, and the properties of the food. She also demonstrated how the platform supports consumers in identifying sustainable packaging and thus making informed purchasing decisions for resource-efficient packaging.
Additional information about PackAn was available at the Repack Network booth at the trade fair on all three days, so that interested parties could discuss the topic directly with the project team.

The research project PackAn was presented at the Open Campus and attracted considerable interest. The project aims to develop an evaluation and information platform for companies and consumers that will help establish sustainable packaging in the market and reduce fossil-based raw materials in the long term. Visitors were explained how packaging can help reduce waste in supply chains in specific areas. The high demand underscores how important packaging is to consumers.

45 Deutschlandstipendium Scholarships awarded at Hochschule Geisenheim University

Focus is not just on financial support, but also an exchange between students and businesses; strong networks for university and junior employees have grown out of the scholarship program in recent years.

In addition to the existing sponsors, six new regional and national companies are sponsoring one or more Deutschlandstipendium scholarships for students at Hochschule Geisenheim University in 2019/20. At an official ceremony on Friday, November 8, 2019, the sponsors, now numbering 33, awarded 45 scholarships to high-achieving and committed students from all degree programs related to beverages, food, plants and nature.

By participating in the national scholarship program, the companies are not only supporting students with outstanding results, but also talented young people who, despite obstacles and challenges, successfully make their own way in life and demonstrate strong social commitment and personal achievement in parallel to their studies. The businesses are also helping to establish a new scholarship culture in Germany because with the Deutschlandstipendium, government and society assume joint responsibility for the leaders and experts of tomorrow.

In addition to financial support, the focus at Hochschule Geisenheim University is on creating a network of personal contacts between the scholarship holders, other students and the university itself. This is why the President of the University Professor Hans Reiner Schultz and Professor Otmar Löhnertz, Vice-president of Academic and Student Affairs also took part in the official award ceremony. Scholarship holders from previous years reported on their experiences and how they benefited from the exchange with their sponsors.

Forum:Praxis, which Hochschule Geisenheim University hosted for the first time this year, provides a platform for networking and intensive interaction. Representatives of ten companies – including many Deutschlandstipendium sponsors – engaged in a direct and open dialogue with students of the Beverage Technology, Food Safety and Food Chain Management degree programs. Discussions on the future job market have resulted, among other things, in internships and employment relationships.

Deutschlandstipendium sponsors also benefit from "gold" status in Hochschule Geisenheim University's job portal, also newly established in 2019, where they have a wide range of possibilities to make themselves known to the students, staff and members of VEG – Geisenheim Alumni Association e. V. at no extra cost.

The Deutschlandstipendium

The Deutschlandstipendium is the largest public-private scholarship program in Germany and supports gifted young people studying at state and state-recognized universities. Students of all degree programs receive 300 euros a month irrespective of personal or parental income, of which 150 euros is provided by sponsors such as businesses, foundations and private individuals. The Federal Government matches this amount with another 150 euros. Deutschlandstipendium holders are among the highest achievers in their degree course, are involved in volunteer work or have worked hard to earn their place at university. In 2018 alone over 27,200 students benefitted from the Deutschlandstipendium. At Hochschule Geisenheim University the Deutschlandstipendium is run by the Communication and University Relations department. Further information can be found at: www.deutschlandstipendium.de.
