Italian-German Double Degree Master's Program
The double-degree master's program Viticulture and Enology - VITIS-VINUM is jointly offered by a consortium of the universities of Turin (in association with the universities of Milan, Palermo, Sassari and Foggia), Verona (in association with the universities of Padua and Udine) and Geisenheim.
Program Goals
The aim of the double degree master's program is to train professional managers who are able to compete in the global wine market with their solid technical and scientific knowledge. This postgraduate course has a strong practical focus fostered through supervised internships that take place in research centers or large wineries in Italy or abroad. The course aims to teach interdisciplinarity and the acquisition of skills to solve complex problems posed by viticulture and wine production systems in relation to their geographical context.
Learning Outcomes
The master’s program imparts knowledge as well as methodological and professional competencies in the fields of viticulture and enology. Students learn to competently and efficiently solve complex tasks arising from technical and economic contexts within the industry.
The program also conveys scientific competencies: these range from acquiring the skills necessary for independent scientific work, such as sourcing and analyzing relevant literature, to the creation of academic texts and the critical handling of primary and secondary sources.
Finally, the program promotes linguistic and social competencies: a wide range of language courses at the participating universities helps students improve their proficiency in English, German, and other languages. The development of communication skills is intended to enable graduates to interact effectively and appropriately with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Engagement with a different (academic) culture and society through studying abroad supports students’ personal development. Additionally, the program has a strong practical component through a supervised internship, which is preferably conducted in research centers or large wineries in Italy or Germany.
The integration of teamwork, as well as the promotion of presentation and moderation skills, are also essential features of the program.
Content
In their first year, students either attend the courses that make up the Scienze Viticole ed Enologiche (Viticulture and Enology) master's degree program at the University of Turin or the courses of the Viticoltura, enologia e mercati vitivinicoli (Viticulture, Oenology and Wine Markets) master's degree program at the University of Verona. Both programs are taught in Italian.
In their second year of study, they switch to the English-taught Viticulture and Enology – VITIS VINUM master's degree program at Hochschule Geisenheim University and complete their studies.
