On November 20, 2025, the GaLaBau Forum South Hesse took place at Hochschule Geisenheim University, focusing on key topics related to sustainability and innovation in landscape construction. The event provided a platform for discussing current and future challenges facing the industry, as well as potential solutions.

The forum opened with a welcome address by Alexander Tilburgs, Regional President of the South Hesse chapter of the Association of Horticulture, Landscape and Sports Facility Construction. He emphasized the industry’s responsibility to act in harmony with nature and highlighted the importance of sustainable practices. In addition, Professor Thomas Muschkullus spoke on behalf of Hochschule Geisenheim University, underscoring the university’s role as a provider of knowledge and a catalyst for forward-looking discussions.

Following this, Günter Beier offered participants ‘a glimpse into the future of the GaLaBau sector’. Using a metaphorical ‘shift in perspective’ through a crystal ball, he encouraged attendees to consider whether current practices will remain viable or whether the industry’s reality might change entirely.

The forum featured a rich selection of presentations and discussion sessions addressing central issues within the field. The morning was shaped by an engaging presentation from Professor Frank Bär on soil, building ground, waste, and the new Substitute Building Materials Ordinance, which came into effect in July 2023. Professor Bär explained the significance of this regulation in an accessible, practice-oriented way and encouraged reflection on circular economy approaches in landscape construction.

Sustainable Construction and Intelligent Irrigation

After the lunch break, the program turned to sustainable construction practices for outdoor facilities. Katja Erke of Landschaftsmanufaktur in Berlin presented the ‘Sustainable Open Spaces’ rating system developed by the Research Society for Landscape Development and Landscaping, which is currently still in draft form and is expected to be published no later than early 2026.

The final presentation of the conference was given by Aquatechnik Bewässerungsanlagen and addressed the importance of intelligent irrigation systems in both private and public settings.

The informative presentations were accompanied by an exhibition of various companies showcasing their latest products and services.

To conclude the forum, Alexander Tilburgs led the final discussion and closing remarks. He thanked the participants and supporters of the event and emphasized the value of dialogue, which the association actively promotes.

Thanks to excellent organization and the support of numerous partners, the GaLaBau Forum was a complete success. The combination of informative presentations, engaging discussions, and practical insights ensured that participants were able to take away valuable knowledge and connections.
