University’s ‘Wein im Wandel’ Podcast Releases New Episode on Novel Grape Varieties

One of the most fundamental challenges facing the wine industry is ensuring the resilience of viticulture. New grape varieties, as well as fast and efficient breeding, have the potential to make a significant impact. But what experiences are being made with new varieties in practice? And what current and future opportunities are available in the field of plant breeding?

The second episode of Hochschule Geisenheim University’s German-language ‘Wein im Wandel’ podcast brings these questions to the forefront. Professor Kai Voss-Fels, head of the Department of Plant Breeding, and Dr. Eva Vollmer, vintner and founder of the ‘Zukunftsweine’ initiative, dive into the topic alongside their host, Professor Hans Reiner Schultz. During their discussion, the experts explore the challenges and opportunities new grape varieties present, particularly in terms of their cultivation and marketing, as well as new cultivation methods and genetics.
