Double Degree Program Italy – Germany in Italian and English Language

VITIS-VINUM is a double Master's degree program, jointly delivered by a consortium of the renowned Universities of Torino (on behalf of the consortium Torino, Milano, Palermo, Sassari and Foggia), Udine (on behalf of the consortium Udine, Padova, Verona and Bolzano) and Geisenheim.

The program focuses on vine cultivation, winemaking and wine marketing, as well as quality management, analysis and certification. Besides learning about new enological procedures, students are taught how to develop effective marketing strategies – which makes them much in demand as consultants by companies in the wine sector.

Graduates of the VITIS-VINUM German-Italian double degree program are ideally equipped for managerial and leadership responsibilities in nationally and internationally active companies.

Semester 3 and 4 take place at Geisenheim University.
Language Lectures in Italy are delivered in Italian language, teaching in Geisenheim is entirely in English

Degree program’s content and road map

The VITIS-VINUM program provides graduates with a solid and comprehensive academic training in the fields of viticulture and enology, quality control in the production and processing of grapes, as well as economics and marketing. The course teaches high-level knowledge and skills to enable you to work efficiently in the wine industry.

Modules offered at Geisenheim University in third Semester are:

  • Advanced Viticulture (6 ECTS)
  • Advanced Enology (6 ECTS)
  • Advanced Wine Business (6 ECTS)
  • Research Project (12 ECTS)
  • Language Course as additional module (2 ECTS)

Program requirement and road map

First-year classes will be held at the University of Torino or the University of Udine, and are conducted in Italian. Italian language skills of at least CEFR B1 (at the time of application) and CEFR B2 (at the time of enrollment) are therefore a requirement.

Second-year classes will be held at Geisenheim University. Whereas semester 3 offers in depth knowledge in current research and industry topics semester 4 is reserved for the master thesis. The master thesis covers the elaboration of an adequate and independent scientific research project implementing scientific methods in a given time. It can be carried out in connection with an experimental research project.

Requirements for the second year at Geisenheim are:

  • a successful completed first year at the University of Torino or Udine
  • a completed 8-week internship in the field of Viticulture or Enology
  • adequate English skills proven by one of the following:
    • IELTS (minimum 6) or
    • TOEFL (minimum 80 points; internet-based test)
    • Cambridge First Certificate – FCE (minimum grade B)

The University of Torino / Udine nominates the candidates for the second year at Geisenheim University.

Professional prospects for graduates

Graduates of the program have access to jobs in management and consultancy roles in the fields of viticulture and enology worldwide. More specifically, they can be employed in the following activities:

  • management and consultancy in large wine-making companies in the following fields: production and processing of grapes and wine, ageing, bottling and marketing of wines and related products
  • high-profile positions on boards and in associations and consortiums operating in the field of vine-growing and wine-making
  • analysis, control, certification and promotion of grape and wine products in public and private companies
  • conducting and managing basic and applied research projects in the field of vine-growing, enological processing, planting systems and enological equipment as well as efficient and effective marketing strategies.
