The University Council plays a central role in the university. Its eight members are chosen by the Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts (HMWK), with Hochschule Geisenheim University having a 50% say, for a period of four years. It is made up of members with positions of responsibility in society, especially in science, business or culture. The council advises the Presidium of the university and has a regulatory role, with access to all university paperwork.
The council also oversees the election of the Presidium members, and approves the annual report and financial report. The council's approval is required for various important decisions, such as budget planning and the establishing as well as termination of degree programs.
