The Bee – From Ecology and Ecosystem Services to Food Production

Insect extinction or bee extinction has become a widely discussed topic in the media. Beekeeping was once taught at Hochschule Geisenheim University, so since the summer semester 2019 the university is offering the module "Die Biene – Von der Ökologie und den Ökosystemleistungen bis Lebensmittelproduktion" ("The Bee - from Ecology and Ecosystem Services to Food Production"). It is an interdisciplinary offer for master's degree students and is open to university staff and students. As the lecture was open to the interested public, it was attended by beekeepers of the Rheingau region and from the other side of Rhine as well as other people interested in bees.

The module is based on the expertise of different departments at Hochschule Geisenheim University, such as Crop Protection, General and Organic Viticulture, Landscape Planning and Nature Conservation, Fresh Produce Logistics and Beverage Research (with the following lecturers: Prof. Dr. Annette Reineke, Dr. Susanne Tittmann, Prof. Dr. Randolf Kauer, Prof. Dr. Judith Kreyenschmidt, Prof. Dr. Ilona Leyer, PD. Dr. Karsten Mody, Prof. Dr. Jedicke and Prof. Dr. Helmut Dietrich (retired). Various external speakers were also part of the module.
