As a result of the Bologna reform and the resulting introduction of Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) has decided that degree programs must be accredited for quality assurance purposes.
In 2017, the criteria and procedures were jointly defined by the federal states in a Specimen decree (MRVO). With the Study Accreditation Regulation (StakV), the State of Hesse has implemented the MRVO into state law. Since 2018, study programs at HGU have to be accredited according to the StakV.
As part of the accreditation process, a panel of experts reviews whether all criteria, such as:
are met.
Responsible for the accreditation of degree programs is the German Accreditation Council (Stiftung Akkreditierungsrat).
