Vine Varieties Day 2025: Experience Innovation in Viticulture

Another highlight during the Open Campus event is Geisenheim's traditional Vine Varieties Day. On Saturday and Sunday the Department of Plant Breeding will open its test facilities (Eibinger Weg 1) to the general public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The event will focus on the following topics:

  • Presenting the newest fungus-resistant crossbreeds (PIWIs), including red PIWIs and Tenturier grapes
  • Presenting new materials in the fields
  • Guided walks across the test facilities hosted by experts
  • Wine tastings of new varieties (including red PIWIs), traditional varieties, and international varieties grown through new microvinification techniques
  • Tasting of wines from Geisenheim's cultivation programs, vinted by private winemakers in different regions.
  • Talks on current cultivation research
  • The life of the Grape Phylloxera under the microscope
  • Techniques and applications of tissue culture in vines
  • Techniques and benefits of genomic research in grapevines
  • Presentation of scientific field trials

Note: Participation in the tasting costs €5 plus a €5 glass deposit. For groups of 10 or more, prior registration is requested (Phone: +49 (0)6722-502-121, Email: rebenzuechtung@hs-gm.de).

The Vine Variety Days will once again take place in the Department's test area in good weather. In case of bad weather, the adjacent lecture halls at Eibinger Weg 4 will be used.
