After the two previous ceremonies had to be held online due to the corona pandemic, University President Prof. Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz, his Vice-President of Academic & Student Affairs Prof. Dr. Alexander von Birgelen and the President of the Geisenheim Alumni Association (VEG) Robert Lönarz were happy to celebrate the graduating class in person. 140 Bachelor and 22 Master students received their certificates in the Fürst-von-Metternich Hall at Schloss Johannisberg.
Due to corona restrictions, the ceremony had to be organized in strict compliance with hygiene regulations. However, in order to allow the graduates to celebrate their academic achievements together with friends and families, the ceremony was split into two sessions: in the morning, graduates of the Horticulture, Fresh Produce Logistics, Beverage Technology and Food Safety programs received their certificates; the ceremony for the Viticulture and Enology and Wine Business programs took place in the afternoon.
The highlight of each ceremony were the speeches of the graduates who reviewed their time at Hochschule Geisenheim University – and also the difficult last year during the corona pandemic – and shared their personal experience. University President Prof. Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz also took the occasion to honor three professors who have retired or are about to: Prof. Dr. Otmar Löhnertz, former Dean and Vice-President of Student & Academic Affairs as well as Head of the Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, Prof. Dr. Max-Bernhard Schröder, Head of the Department of Molecular Plant Science, and Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Schwarz, Head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering. The individual departments will also honor their outgoing professors in separate smaller ceremonies.
Each ceremony was followed by a reception at Villa Monrepos Park in Geisenheim, which provided the perfect setting to announce this year’s winner of the Landscape Architecture Student's Award: Jessica Staaden and Johanna Moraweg, who studied Environmental Management and Urban Planning in Metropolitan Areas (M.Eng) received the award, which is worth 500 euros. It is sponsored in equal parts by the following associations: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gartenkunst und Landschaftskultur e. V., Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten (bdla) Hessen e. V., Fachverband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau Hessen-Thüringen e. V. as well as Hessische Vereinigung für Naturschutz und Landschaftspflege e. V.
Hochschule Geisenheim University congratulates all graduates and wished them all the best for their professional and private future.
