Prof. Dr. Monika Christmann (l.) and Angelika Wiesgen-Pick, Head of BSI.

On February 13, 2019, 7.30 p.m. a workshop for parents about the responsible use of alcohol within families will be taking place at Hochschule Geisenheim University. The workshop is part of the initiative „Klartext reden!“ (let's talk openly) with Professor Monika Christmann, Head of the Department of Enology, who is Patron of the initiative.

Next Wednesday, February 13, Hochschule Geisenheim University will be organizing a parent workshop which is part of the state-wide “Klartext reden!” initiative, the goal of which is to educate participants about responsible use of alcohol and give hands-on advice to parents: How can you talk to your children about alcohol without being pushed away? How can you be a role model when it comes to responsible alcohol consumption and how should you set limits for your children?

Professor Monika Christmann, Head of the Department of Enology, has kindly agreed to act as patron of the initiative. "Being a university that carries out research on enology and teaches young students in the field of wine and beverage production, we are aware of our responsibility with regard to alcohol consumption. We want to raise awareness among young people as early as possible - helping them to know what the legal drinking age is and how much alcohol they are allowed to consume", says Professor Christmann. The “Klartext reden!” workshops are an ideal opportunity for parents to network. "We want to motivate parents to talk with their children about alcohol and give parents hands-on advice for successful abuse prevention."

Psychologist Barbara von Arnim will lead the workshop, which is open to parents and their children from the age of 13 to 16. The workshop is free of charge, and registration is not necessary. The “Klartext reden!” project was set up in 2005 by the Arbeitskreis Alkohol und Verantwortung (alcohol and responsibility initiative) of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Spirituosen-Industrie und -Importeure e. V.  – the federal organization for the German spirits industry and importers. Independent scientists and representatives of the BundesElternRat (federal organization for parents and children) developed the program of the initiative. Parents are also welcome to make use of the webpage at www.klartext-elterntraining.de, where they can participate in an online training course and get in touch with each other and the lecturers.
