The CoLAB is part of a comprehensive room concept that was developed as part of the ‘CoLABorate’ university didactics project on the basis of a needs analysis. The new room is already being used in a variety of ways, not just for teaching, but also for meetings, conferences and project meetings.
In addition to the CoLAB, Hochschule Geisenheim University has created several new flexible work and learning spaces in four campus buildings as well as outdoor areas. These spaces combine sustainability, student well-being, and forward-thinking learning formats and serve as prime examples of the university’s commitment to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The new areas reflect Hochschule Geisenheim University's holistic approach: sustainability is not just a topic to be taught and researched at the university, but also actively practiced.
The opening ceremony was just as diverse and interactive as the space itself. Highlights included a moss art workshop for greening the CoLAB, a graphical recording of student visions for the future, refreshments from the Green Office and the student-run icecream club, a flea market hosted by the AStA, and food and music at the ‘Altes Weinfass’. The many guests were welcomed by Professor Mirjam Hey, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, and AStA board member Tobias Görres.
“With the CoLABorate project, we’ve laid an important foundation for a campus that students actively experience and use as a space for both living and learning,” emphasized Professor Mirjam Hey. “We’re especially pleased that many students use the CoLAB during their free time to study, work, and exchange ideas. With these new learning environments, Hochschule Geisenheim University is sending a strong message in support of participatory, inclusive, and sustainable higher education, shaped by and for the university community.”
The CoLAB was funded through the QuiS program. QuiS is an initiative of the Hessian state government aimed at enhancing the quality of teaching and learning and supporting targeted educational development.
